SVF Weekly report for 9/12

If you would like to see information included on this report, send us an email at contact@sciotovalleyforward.com.

Here’s the report for the week ending Friday, Sept. 12:

At the Workforce Hub:

  • The Hub (including the Ross OMJ office) received 170 visits (as of Thursday) from people seeking help with job searches, enhancing interview skills, and resume building. Nearly 100 of those visits came on Tuesday. Since Aug. 11, 628 people have been served at the Hub. This does not count visits at the Pike, Vinton, or Jackson OMJ centers. Displaced workers in those counties may choose to visit their local OMJ center rather than go to the Hub.

  • The Hub continues to be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays for the remaining weeks in September.

  • Traffic to SVF has been brisk in September. Visits are up 8%, unique visitors are up 8%, and total page views went up 13% since Sept. 1. To date, the website has seen 8.5K visits, 7.6K unique visiors and 10K page views.

  • Local & state officials are waiting on a response to a request for grant money to help dislocated workers from the paper mill site and other companies currently experiencing a downturn.

New events/resources:

  • THIS WEEK SVF is hosting Macey Power, a local certified business and life coach, on Sept. 17 to talk about short-term planning. It’s a FREE session and can help you stay focused as the job search continues. Click here for more information.

  • NEW For those who live in Pike County, the OMJ Job Van will be on the road in the coming weeks and can provide assistance to job seekers in the area. The first stop is Wednesday, Sept. 17. Check our events calendar for the times and places.

  • We’re now up to 65 employers are already registered for the upcoming Ross County Employment Expo from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. If your company is looking for workers and would like to set up, click here to get registered.

  • We’ve had a few questions about how the Mill City Resiliency Fund works. Donations are currently being accepted and a process formed on how to access funds from MCRF. Contributions can be made at any of  VCNB’s 16 banking centers, the United Way of Ross County office or website at www.unitedwayross.org, or Mill City Apparel. Contact United Way of Ross County with questions.

New job opportunities:

  • Live interviews resume this week with potential employers, as General Mills, COAD and Pioneer School will be at the Hub on Monday. Check our events page for a schedule of upcoming employers scheduled for on-site interviews at the Workforce Hub. Employers, if you would like to set up and interview folks, click here to get started.

Any word on a buyer for the mill?

  • No new news on this front. As Tom Petty once sang, “The waiting is the hardest part.”

  • Less than 100 people remain employed at the Pixelle site, another job cut of less than 50 is planned for mid-September, which will give a final workforce that will remain in place to maintain the site.
